Comments From The District Vice President Aug 2006
Membership loss continues to be a problem for District Five of the Sons of Norway. According to the membership report I receive from the Sons of Norway Headquarters, District 5 lost an additional 23 members since the previous monthly report. We know, however, there have been membership increases in some of our local lodges.
At the District Meeting held in La Crosse, Wisconsin, seven lodges were recognized for membership increases of greater than 5%. The District presented $500 to Hjalmer R. Holand #549, (large lodges) and Lincolnland #598, (smaller lodges), as part of the District New Member Incentive program. The other large lodges recognized were Elvedal #556, Edvard Grieg #657 and Gronnvik #632 and the small lodges Samhold #473 and Vennligfolk #627.
I will continue to send names of potential local lodge members from the list of members in the Spirit of the New Century Lodge, (5-999) and the Central Lodge, (5000) to the lodge Vice Presidents or the Membership Chairpersons, from the lists sent to me from Headquarters. In the most recent report eleven members of the New Century Lodge and seven of the Central Lodge, have transferred their memberships to local lodges. We welcome those 18 into our local lodges.
In addition to the names, I hope your lodges are making use of the other resources available from Sons of Norway. Many of you met Nicole Newman at the convention in La Crosse. You should keep in touch with her for ideas on things to help increase memberships. The most important and dependable new member recruitment device is your current members, as you know. Remind them to continue to ask people to join Sons of Norway.
Fraternally, Gil Bergsrud
5th District Vice President
