Recreation News May 2007

Looking for some new lodge activities?
What a great time of the year to organize some sports and recreation activities for your lodge. Whether your members are young, old, agile, sports-minded or just like to have fun, there is an activity that your lodge could offer to involve members and attract prospective members.

Have you considered offering some of these activities at your lodges?
Card party or board game night
Golf outing
Having a curling team
Meeting twice a week at your lodge to go for a walk
Having/sponsoring a team in a charity walking event
Meeting at a bike trail and biking for an afternoon
Having someone demonstrate Viking games (try a Masse Moro camper)
Having a softball game, basketball game or bowling night with a neighboring lodge
Holding an old-time dance
Offering a weekly aerobics class for lodge members
Going to a state park for an afternoon hike
Meeting at your local swimming pool each week for lodge lap swims
Going ice skating or sledding as a lodge
Having a flag football game
Ordering videos, DVD’s or CD’s from the International SN website and having a Movie Night
If members can’t physically participate, then go watch a baseball game
Have a jump rope contest at a lodge meeting (or a hula hoop event!)

Some of these events could really be fun for members and a good way to involve families into lodge activities. Many of these events also qualify for part of the sports medal program. Make sure you check out the new Idrettsmerke form as it has been changed to use 10 minute intervals as the measurement for the various activities. The form is located at (Members Only Section).

Get your golfers involved!
Valhall Open- Norseman of the Lakes will be hosting the Valhall Open on Saturday, August 25, at the Prairie Woods Golf Course in Janesville. The cost for 18 holes of golf, cart, prizes and refreshments is $54. For more information, contact Roger Odalen at 608-873-0890. Complete details and registration forms are available at

Other Golf Opportunities? Is your lodge hosting a golf outing? If so, please contact Darlene Arneson, District Recreation Director, with the date, location of the event and list of golfers and lodges involved. I will submit a list of the lodge golf outings that included area lodges to the District board at our fall meeting so they might be considered a district activity. Please send the lists to Darlene Arneson by October 1 for consideration.
