President's Message March 2007

We are already well into the new year for Sons of Norway Officers. This year the Fifth District Board decided to have Leadership Workshops Phase II instead of Zone Officer Seminars. The Zone Directors are dividing the Zones in half and each is leading the Leadership Workshops. In some cases individual lodges will have their own workshop. This program is for all officers and those interested in becoming leaders. When you are asked to attend the Leadership Workshop, please make every effort to attend.

One of the duties of a president of a local lodge when he or she is installed is to appoint a membership committee, usually chaired by the Vice President. Our District has set a goal of having a membership committee in 100% of our lodges by the end of this year. When you are asked about this by the District Vice President, we hope that you will help us to reach this goal.

In addition to the Fifth District Incentive program for this biennium International has announced a membership recruitment contest for 2007 called Norwegian Experience. From January 1 through December 31, 2007 members who recruit new dues paying Sons of Norway members will be automatically entered into a drawing to win a Norwegian Experience of a lifetime for two. The winner will be able to choose from different guided tours and cruises in Norway. This will be a 10-day Norwegian Experience, including business class international air travel, deluxe accommodations and $500 in US dollars spending money.

There is no limit to the number of entries allowed. Be sure to have your name and membership number on the application which must be received by 12/31/07 to qualify for an entry.

This is the most ambitious incentive ever offered by International Sons of Norway. Watch coming issues of the Viking for more details and you could be a winner.

I have noticed that many of your lodge newsletters have the Sons of Norway Mission Statement listed. The problem is that we have a new Mission Statement that was approved at the International Convention in August 2006. It is a little shorter and more clearly states our Mission. Please start using the new Mission Statement which is "The Mission of Sons of Norway is to promote and preserve the heritage and culture of Norway and provide quality insurance and financial products to its members." This can be found on page 2 of the February Viking magazine.

Fraternally,
Harland Anderson, President Fifth District Sons of Norway
